Sorry this took me so long. Often times I’m a 7 day per week guy...sometimes 14 hour days, and we just had a baby...on top of that, I'm a procrastinator. I got my crate a week or 2 ago. When I left Africa i was told at the airport that i would get my hides and horns in July. As promised, i got them in July. I also think I’m now a record holder... out of the handful of folks I know that have hunted Africa, none of them have had a turnaround time that's anywhere close to that fast (3 months). Hopefully this can make its way onto the internet and in front of the eyes of a first time African hunter. Many folks are turned off from hunting Africa, not because of cost, but because they hear about choosing someone to hunt with, dipping, shipping, brokers, export permits, custom forms, etc. It seems like an impossible hassle for most first timers and they don't know where to start so they opt out.
I would love to put those folks onto Richard Holmes. I pretty much booked a hunt and that was it. Richard sent all the information and forms i needed (which are very simple to complete, especially with a cheat sheet). He sets you up with a top notch travel agent that handles all your flights, scheduling of pickups and drop-offs, and books you with the Afton house (the folks at Afton are worth their weight in gold!). It's a cake walk...even for a guy from the Midwest that still uses a flip phone. After the hunt, taxidermy Africa handles your trophies...and no you don't have to have them mounted there if you have a taxidermist you are loyal to. They do good work, but are also happy to ship hides and horns. The process after i left was also very smooth. Jackie at taxidermy Africa will keep you posted at every step. They find shipping companies and give you a couple bids to choose from. You pick your shipping company and everything is taken care of...even the broker. I went with Stanwell Logistics and they are phenomenal. They are very friendly, helpful, and extraordinarily professional and efficient. Mark is great. D&L was my broker and they were also very efficient. It is very clear to me that Richard uses only businesses that are professional and good at what they do. There are a lot of horror stories that come from hunts like these, but I can assure any prospective hunters that Richard only deals with the best of the best in this industry.
For any prospective first time hunters I’ll give a synapses of the whole process and how easy it is with Richard.
Step 1: You book a hunt and tell Custom Travel what your dates are
Step 2: You fill out a couple forms
Step 3: You hop on a plane and arrive in Africa
Step 4: You are met at the airport and are worry free for the duration of your time there
Step 5: You tell a taxidermist what you want
Step 6: You pick Stanwell because they are awesome
Step 7: You receive your trophies
Step 8: You hug Jackie at Taxidermy Africa if you ever meet her because she deserves itIt is honestly, that easy….no hidden hassles…that is seriously all you do.Oh, and the hunting is outstanding…I would send any first timer down this road that I took as a guinea pig on my first trip.
